At St Mary’s, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British values of DemocracyRule of LawIndividual Liberty, and Mutual Respect and Tolerance. These values are embedded throughout our curriculum, assemblies, and enrichment activities, helping pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to thrive as responsible citizens in modern Britain.

Democracy

We believe every child should have a voice. Our School Council is a strong and active body, with representatives elected annually by their classmates. During the election process, teachers explain how the council works and how it reflects democratic systems in our community and country.

School Council members are encouraged to share their peers’ views and bring ideas forward for discussion. They often consult their classes on key issues, ensuring decisions are inclusive and representative.

Each year, we also hold formal elections for Head Boy and Head Girl. Candidates are nominated, prepare speeches, and present them to the whole school before a democratic vote takes place.

When national elections occur, we mirror the process in school with a polling station and ballot boxes, giving pupils a real-life experience of democracy in action.

Rule of Law

Understanding the importance of rules and laws is central to our ethos. At the start of each year, pupils discuss why rules matter and work together to create their own class charters, linking them to our school expectations of being Safe, Ready, and Respectful.

Through our Discovery Education curriculum, PSHE lessons, and assemblies, children learn about the role of laws in society and how they protect us. They explore fairness, justice, and consequences, helping them appreciate that rules are there to keep everyone safe and ensure equality.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Respect for others is woven throughout our curriculum and school life. In RE, PSHE, and through our school values, pupils learn to celebrate diversity, value similarities and differences, and understand different faiths and cultures.

We encourage open discussion and reflection, helping children develop empathy and tolerance. Our aim is to create an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and respected.

Embedding British Values

These values are reinforced through Worship, assemblies, enrichment activities, and special events such as themed days and charity work. They are not taught in isolation but are part of the wider culture of our school.
