Subject Vision

At St Mary’s, our Art and Design curriculum begins in the Early Years through the Creating with Materials and Being Imaginative and Expressive strands of the EYFS Framework, where children are encouraged to explore and experiment with a wide range of media and techniques, developing confidence in expressing their ideas and imagination. This early exploration forms the foundation for a well-sequenced, coherent subject scheme that progressively develops children’s skills and knowledge of visual elements, art forms, artists and art movements as they move through the school. We provide opportunities for pupils to make meaningful links between art and other curriculum areas, deepening understanding and creativity. We want staff to feel secure in delivering a rich and inspiring art curriculum that builds upon the curiosity, imagination and creativity fostered in the Early Years, while also feeling confident to follow children’s ideas and inspiration to explore and improvise where appropriate. Teachers are supported to assess children’s artistic knowledge, skills and creativity accurately and to understand how their year group’s expectations contribute to the wider progression of artistic development across the key stages. Ultimately, we aim for all children to develop a lifelong appreciation of art, increasing their knowledge, confidence and ability to express themselves through a broad and inclusive Art and Design curriculum.
